Laparoscopic vs. open kidney removal surgery study

Who can take part

  • You have a non-working kidney due to long-term inflammation or a benign condition, and need simple removal of the whole kidney or part of it.
  • Or you have a small kidney tumor (7 cm or less) that can be removed while saving the rest of the kidney.
  • Or you have a localized kidney tumor that needs removal of the whole kidney (or kidney and ureter) but has not spread to major blood vessels.
  • You are healthy enough for general anesthesia and surgery, with an ASA score of 1, 2, or 3.
  • You have not had major surgery on the same side of your back or belly that would make keyhole surgery difficult.
  • You are not pregnant, not severely obese (BMI over 40), and do not have a bleeding disorder that cannot be corrected.
