Who can take part
- You must be between 20 and 40 years old if you have aggressive periodontitis or are healthy; or between 30 and 40 if you have chronic periodontitis.
- If you have aggressive periodontitis, you need evidence of at least 30% bone loss around at least 2 teeth, as seen on an X-ray.
- If you have chronic periodontitis, you need at least 3 sites with deep gum pockets (5 mm or more).
- If you are a healthy control, you must have no signs of gum disease or bone loss on X-rays.
- You cannot have taken antibiotics in the last 3 months, smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, or have uncontrolled diabetes.
