Blood Bicarbonate and Tube Feeding Tolerance in ICU Patients

Enteral Nutrition Intolerance (EFI)

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You started tube feeding (nutrition through a tube) within 48 hours of entering the ICU
  • You are expected to stay in the ICU for at least 72 hours (3 days)
  • You do not have a perforated stomach, active GI bleeding, or bowel blockage
  • You have not had major abdominal surgery in the past month
  • You do not have diabetes, advanced liver disease, kidney failure requiring dialysis, or are in end-of-life care
