Who can take part
- You have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a common type of head and neck cancer) in your mouth, throat, larynx, or hypopharynx
- You are planning to receive radiation therapy at a dose of at least 55 Gy (a standard or higher dose), with or without chemotherapy
- You are 18 years or older
- You are well enough to tolerate the treatment (ECOG performance status 0–2, meaning you can carry out most normal activities)
- You do not have an allergy to mupirocin (an antibiotic ointment)
- Your cancer is not an early-stage vocal cord cancer (unless it has spread to lymph nodes)
