- Age 18–50 years old
- Gummy smile showing more than 3 mm of upper gum when you smile, caused by an upper lip that moves too much
- Good overall health with no serious medical conditions, or only mild, well-controlled conditions like treated high blood pressure
- Good oral hygiene (able to keep teeth and gums clean)
- Never had lip repositioning surgery before
- Good general health status that allows safe use of local anesthesia
