  • Diagnosed with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus that cannot be surgically removed right now
  • No spread of cancer to distant organs like lungs, liver, or bones
  • Age 18–75 years old and in good enough health to tolerate treatment
  • Blood, kidney, and liver function within acceptable ranges (checked by blood tests)
  • No prior chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy for esophageal cancer
  • No active autoimmune disease (like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or Crohn's disease) or recent heart problems
