Mesh Types and Pain After Hernia Repair Surgery

This study compares two types of surgical mesh—one made from animal tissue and one synthetic—to see which causes less pain after laparoscopic hernia repair. You'd be eligible if you have a hernia on one side causing pain and another hernia on the opposite side that isn't causing symptoms, and you're willing to have both repaired in the same surgery.

Who can take part

  • Age 18–80 years
  • One hernia causing pain and another hernia on the opposite side with no symptoms
  • Willing to have both hernias repaired together using laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery
  • No emergency hernia situations (strangulation or incarceration)
  • Not currently taking long-term pain medications or living with chronic pain syndrome
  • Able to receive porcine-derived mesh (no religious or ethical objections)
