This trial is testing a new way to use special tests (called integrons) to help doctors decide if they can safely use fewer strong antibiotics for urinary tract infections that are resistant to common treatments. It is for people in the hospital who have a resistant infection and may help reduce side effects and prevent more resistance.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and are in the hospital or emergency department.
  • You have a urinary tract infection with a fever or low body temperature, but it is not severe (no sepsis).
  • A test shows bacteria in your urine or a certain type of bacteria (gram-negative) on a stain.
  • You need antibiotics through a vein (IV) and must stay in the hospital.
  • In the last 6 months, you had a sample that grew a bacteria resistant to a specific strong antibiotic (third-generation cephalosporin).
  • You are not pregnant, not allergic to penicillin-type antibiotics, and do not have a very low white blood cell count.
