Who can take part
- You are on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) and expected to need it for at least 48 hours.
- You have not had a bowel movement for 48 hours or more, or your doctor says you have too much fluid in your stomach.
- You are 18 to 85 years old.
- You have not had any stomach or bowel surgery in the past 8 weeks.
- You are not allergic to neostigmine, and do not have conditions like asthma, very slow heartbeat, or Parkinson's disease.
