Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You had heart bypass surgery (only the bypass, no other heart procedures).
  • You will be in the ICU on the first day after surgery.
  • You have a temporary pacing wire attached to your heart (placed during surgery).
  • Your doctor has already planned to give you a 500 mL fluid bolus (Ringer's lactate) in the first two hours after surgery.
  • You are able to give consent before your surgery.
  • Your ICU doctor agrees you are stable enough for the study.
