Pneumococcal bacteria in healthy young children

Pneumococcal Carriage

This study looks at how long pneumococcal bacteria naturally stay in the throat of young children. By swabbing your child's throat every two weeks for a year, researchers hope to better understand how these bacteria spread and may help prevent infections in the future.

Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 28 days and 4 years old at the start.
  • You must be able to read and speak English or Spanish.
  • You must agree to answer questionnaires and have your child's throat swabbed every two weeks for 12 months.
  • Your child must not have serious chronic health problems like cystic fibrosis, heart defects, or a weakened immune system.
  • Your child cannot be taking immune-weakening medications like long-term steroids, chemotherapy, or biologics.
