Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 40 years old or older than 65.
  • You are having surgery that can use a laryngeal mask airway (a breathing tube placed in the throat).
  • You have not had surgery on your upper airway (nose, throat, or voice box).
  • You do not have a history of acid reflux, stomach ulcers, or bleeding in the stomach.
  • You have no recent lung or airway infections, and no lung conditions like COPD or cystic fibrosis.
  • You can open your mouth wide enough, do not have loose teeth, and have no allergy to ultrasound gel.
