- You are being admitted to a medical ICU because of pneumonia
- Your pneumonia is new (it developed after admission or was newly diagnosed)
- The pneumonia is not after an illness that was already treated for a long time before arrival
- If you were transferred from another hospital, you were treated for pneumonia for 48 hours or less
- If you were treated before transfer, there must be a known pneumonia germ (causative organism) identified
