Measuring dead lung air to predict organ failure in sepsis

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 or older).
  • You have severe sepsis or septic shock and need a mechanical ventilator (a breathing machine).
  • You can be enrolled within the first 6 hours after arriving to the ICU.
  • You do not have a plan to stop life-sustaining treatment or a hospice order.
  • You do not have a terminal illness expected to lead to death within 48 hours of ICU admission.
  • You do not have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
