Who can take part

  • You have severe obesity, such as a very high BMI (or a projected BMI by age 18).
  • If BMI is lower, you must also have at least one obesity-related health problem (sleep apnea, liver inflammation, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or certain pressure problems in the head).
  • You tried an organized weight-loss program for at least 6 months before considering surgery.
  • Your body growth is mostly complete (Tanner stage 4 or higher, or bone age above the teen thresholds).
  • You can follow surgery instructions and long-term follow-up visits.
  • A patient plus parent/legal guardian must sign the consent form.
