This study compares liver samples and blood tests from people with alcohol-related fatty liver disease, alcohol-related hepatitis, and cirrhosis (including some with liver cancer) against healthy controls. It aims to better tell these liver conditions apart and understand what is different between them.

Who can take part
- You have one of these: alcohol-related fatty liver, alcohol hepatitis (mild or advanced), alcohol-related cirrhosis (with or without liver cancer), or (for one group) biopsy-proven NASH with chronic hepatitis C
- If you drank alcohol heavily: men typically >60 grams/day and women >40 grams/day
- You have abnormal liver blood tests (for the fatty liver group), or biopsy findings showing inflammation and/or liver scarring (for hepatitis/cirrhosis groups)
- You do NOT have certain other liver causes like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, Wilson’s disease, hemochromatosis, or drug-induced liver injury
- BMI is not too high (BMI must be ≤35 for alcohol/NASH groups; healthy controls must be BMI ≤27)
