Who can take part
- You have alcohol-related liver disease: either acute alcoholic hepatitis or alcoholic cirrhosis (or you may be a control with no chronic liver disease)
- If you are in the acute hepatitis group, you have a history of heavy alcohol use before admission (over set daily amounts)
- You must have specific blood test results: bilirubin above 50 mg/L and only moderate liver enzyme rise (transaminases under 500 U/L with a typical 2:1 ASAT/ALAT pattern)
- You need liver tissue confirmation for the alcoholic hepatitis diagnosis (usually with a transjugular liver biopsy)
- You must not have other causes of liver inflammation: no autoimmune liver disease and no hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV infection
- You must not be pregnant
