Outpatient surgery to map lymph nodes in mouth and throat cancer

Cancer T1-N0 or T2-N0 of the Oral Cavity

This trial studies a planned, same-day (outpatient) surgery approach to find and check cancer spread to nearby lymph nodes in early-stage mouth and throat squamous cell cancer. It may help doctors remove the right lymph nodes and decide on any needed further treatment.

Who can take part

  • You’re an adult (age 18+) with biopsy-proven mouth or throat (oropharynx) squamous cell cancer within the last month
  • Your cancer is early stage: T1 or T2, with no lymph node spread (N0) and no distant spread (M0), and it can be surgically treated
  • Your surgeon will perform a detailed scope exam of the nose/throat area to confirm the tumor and its exact “T” stage
  • Your surgery plan must be suitable for outpatient (same-day) anesthesia and recovery (ASA I–III, stable)
  • You must be able to attend follow-up visits for up to 2 years and understand the study and its monitoring
  • You must not have certain exclusions like prior head/neck radiation or prior head/neck surgery, and you must be able to receive the tracer injection used for the lymph-node mapping
