Who can take part

  • You’re 18 years or older and able to make your own decisions
  • You’re scheduled for abdominal surgery (either laparoscopic or open, with a midline or transverse incision)
  • You can read/sign the consent form and follow the study steps (including exercise and visits)
  • You do not have conditions that strongly affect movement or ability to participate (for example, certain nerve/muscle diseases or being wheelchair-bound)
  • You do not already have a chronic pain condition or regular strong pain medicines that change pain signaling (for example, long-term opioid use or certain antidepressants/anti-seizure “pain-modulating” medicines)
  • You have not had abdominal wall mesh placed before (except mesh used for an inguinal hernia repair)
