Exercise plus mind-based therapy for painful shoulder pain

This trial tests whether adding “mind-based” movement practice (action observation and motor imagery) to regular physiotherapy exercises can reduce chronic, muscle-related shoulder pain. It’s designed for people who are referred in primary care and haven’t had similar shoulder physiotherapy in the last 6 months.

Who can take part

  • You have a clinician-diagnosed shoulder problem that started from muscle-related causes and you were referred to physiotherapy through primary care.
  • You have not had physiotherapy for the shoulder from the same cause in the past 6 months.
  • You do not have certain whole-body conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, cancer, or a diagnosed neurological disease.
  • You have not had surgery on the affected shoulder.
  • You can participate safely: no severe mobility limits like advanced “frozen shoulder,” no uncontrolled or relevant Type 2 diabetes, and no major psychiatric or personality disorders.
