Who can take part

  • You need a central venous catheter placed (a line into a large vein)
  • Ultrasound shows your jugular vein size changes with breathing (called respiratory variation)
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have not already had unsuccessful attempts using non-ultrasound-guided methods
  • There is no ongoing, unresolved lung bleed or air pocket (pneumothorax or hemothorax) at the time you enroll
  • You are willing to sign informed consent
