Blood-flow training after ACL surgery for teens

This trial looks at whether a special exercise method that changes blood flow during physical therapy (called BFRT) can improve recovery after ACL reconstruction in teens. It may help strength and rehab progress, but you would need to meet several surgery and safety requirements and attend many PT visits.

Who can take part

  • Be age 12–18 and able to participate in the study in English (you and a parent/guardian)
  • Have an ACL reconstruction done at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta using a quadriceps tendon graft
  • Have X-rays showing your growth plates are closed (you are past the main growth phase)
  • Have finished a pre-surgery strength check for thigh and hip muscles
  • Be able to follow the rehab schedule, including starting PT within 5 days after surgery and attending at least 20 PT visits in the first 16 weeks
  • No certain other knee operations at the time of ACL surgery (like meniscus repair or procedures that limit weight-bearing) and no prior knee surgery
