Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • Your cancer is esophagus cancer (or the gastro-esophageal junction) and is proven by biopsy as one of these types: adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, or gastro-esophageal junction cancer.
  • Your cancer can be removed with surgery (it has not spread to distant organs).
  • If you can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test before joining and agree to informed consent.
  • Your cancer is not Stage IV, and you do not have the specific GEJ Siewert type III esophageal cancer.
  • You must not have serious reasons you cannot have the planned open, chest-based surgery (for example, certain prior chest/thoracic surgery or injuries that would interfere with the comparison).
