Who can take part
- You (or your child) are having an orthopedic surgery where bone marrow-containing bone is discarded
- You have one of these diagnoses: sickle cell-related thalassemia types (S/S double-sided conditions) at age 2+ or HbE-β thalassemia or severe β-thalassemia
- You are not currently having an active sickle cell flare (like severe pain crisis), acute chest syndrome, stroke, or a current infection
- You are not pregnant
- You can (or your guardian can) sign written consent to take part
- Your blood counts and clotting tests meet limits: platelets ≥150,000, neutrophils ≥2000 (or ≥1000 if on hydroxyurea), and normal enough clotting times (prothrombin time ≤17 seconds, partial thromboplastin time ≤43 seconds) and no major past bleeding problems
