Who can take part

  • Be 18 years old or older and need a breathing tube placed through the mouth (oral intubation)
  • Have at least one reason the doctors expect a difficult intubation (past difficult intubation, or prior neck/head radiation plus prior mouth/throat/larynx surgery)
  • Or meet 3 or more risk factors such as limited jaw opening, limited neck movement, or certain measurements showing a smaller/“harder to access” airway
  • Not have an untreated, higher-risk stomach/esophagus situation such as an untreated hiatal hernia or uncontrolled acid reflux (GERD)
  • Not have a narrowed windpipe (known tracheal narrowing)
