Laparoscopic versus open ALPPS to regrow liver before surgery

Who can take part

  • You have liver cancer and are planning an extended right liver surgery (right hepatectomy or right trisectionectomy)
  • You are at least 18 years old and can give informed consent
  • Your “future liver remnant” is small: it must be 30% or less, and a dye test must be below a set level (ICG clearance at 15 minutes < 18%)
  • Your liver function fits Child-Pugh Class A (mildest cirrhosis) and your anesthesia risk is low (ASA score < 3)
  • Your energy level is good enough (ECOG score 0–2) and platelets are above 100 (units as reported by your clinic)
  • You should not have severe liver complications like fluid buildup (ascites), bleeding from veins (varices), or confusion from liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy)
