Who can take part

  • You must be in the ICU after cardiac (heart) surgery and have signs of worsening severe infection (SOFA score higher by 2 points than your previous check)
  • Your tests must show strong inflammation/infection signals (procalcitonin above 2 ng/mL and CRP above 150 ng/mL)
  • You must be needing a medication to support blood pressure (norepinephrine infusion)
  • You must have evidence of infection in blood (a positive blood culture)
  • You must not have active bleeding or a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (a dangerous low-platelet reaction to heparin)
