Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and can give study consent (or consent rules are met for your type of study participation).
  • Your injury is a primary tibia (shin bone) fracture treated with an internal metal nail placed inside the bone (intramedullary nailing).
  • Your fracture is considered high risk for infection, such as an open fracture (except certain severe types), delayed treatment after temporary fixation, compartment syndrome needing release surgery, or severe closed tissue injury (specific grades).
  • If you join the coated-nail group, you must receive the ZNN Bactiguard tibia nail; if in the control group, you had an uncoated conventional titanium nail.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you can attend required follow-up visits and follow the study plan.
