Who can take part

  • Be age 18–45 and right-handed.
  • Have no COVID symptoms in the week before testing, and be either fully vaccinated (final dose at least 2 weeks ago) or have a negative COVID test within 4 days.
  • Not have serious vision issues (glasses/contacts are okay), and not have frequent severe headaches, glaucoma, heart or lung disease, high blood pressure, psychiatric conditions, or learning/attention conditions.
  • No history of stroke, seizures/epilepsy (including family history), or severe head injury/fainting; also avoid if you have diabetes.
  • No metal implants in the head except titanium; no cochlear implants, implanted neurostimulators, pacemakers, implanted heart lines, or medication infusion devices; and your hair must allow the TMS device to touch your scalp (no dreadlocks/weaves/hair extensions).
  • Avoid recent risk factors before your test day: no recreational drugs, limit alcohol (no more than 3 drinks), no more than 3 cups of coffee in the last hour, and no less than 4 hours of sleep; also don’t do other brain stimulation the same day.
