Test sputum-guided care to reduce cough in lung scarring

This study uses analysis of mucus (sputum) to guide treatment with the goal of reducing long-lasting cough in adults with interstitial lung disease (ILD). You may be asked to provide sputum samples and may receive treatment decisions based on those results.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and can give written consent
  • You have ILD (lung scarring) such as IPF, chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, CTD-ILD, or pneumoconiosis
  • Your cough has lasted daily for at least 8 weeks
  • You can produce an adequate sputum sample (sometimes using a breathing treatment to help you cough it up)
  • You do not have certain ILD types, like systemic sclerosis–related ILD or sarcoidosis
  • Your cough is not from another clear cause (like reflux, certain blood pressure medicines, or a recent viral illness)
