This study tests whether stimulating a nerve in the ear (called auricular vagal nerve stimulation) can improve upper gut symptoms in teens who may have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) or hypermobile spectrum disorder (HSD). It also checks whether this treatment helps nerves that control the body (autonomic nervous system) and how well the gut moves.

Who can take part

  • Be between 10 and 18 years old
  • Have ongoing upper stomach/throat gut symptoms (like nausea, pain, or reflux) that have not been explained by another illness
  • Have signs that your joint flexibility may fit hEDS or HSD (Beighton score at least 4 out of 9) and a clinician’s concern about this
  • Be English-speaking and be able to answer questionnaires with no major other cause for your symptoms
  • Have a parent/guardian willing to join the study, and you are willing to participate
  • Avoid situations that strongly suggest other medical causes for symptoms (like certain stomach or bowel diseases)
