Compare bypass versus stent treatment for leg artery blockages

This study compares two ways to treat long blockages in the superficial femoral artery (a main artery in the thigh): bypass surgery versus an endovascular (stent/through-a-vessel) procedure. It may help people with painful leg claudication to choose the approach most likely to keep blood flowing and improve symptoms.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult and able to understand the study and sign the consent form
  • You have one-sided (unilateral) leg artery disease causing walking pain (Rutherford 2 or 3)
  • Your artery blockage is in the thigh artery (superficial femoral artery) and is long (15–25 cm), classified as type C or D
  • You are eligible for both treatments: bypass surgery and the endovascular procedure
  • You can’t be pregnant or breastfeeding, and if you could become pregnant you must use effective birth control during the study
  • Blood flow in the artery above the blockage (iliac flow) must be normal or successfully restored, and at least one artery below the knee must still be open
