Who can take part
- You are 18 or older
- You are admitted to the ICU and expected to need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) for at least 48 hours
- Your breathing-machine use is for treatment of illness, not just for procedures like scopes (bronchoscopy, endoscopy, colonoscopy)
- You did not have long-term (chronic) breathing failure before this hospital stay
- You are not having coughing up blood or widespread bleeding in the lungs
- You are not taking certain study-relevant medications or supplements like N-acetylcysteine, aspirin, or fish oil
