Who can take part

  • You are the pregnant patient, age 18–40, and you can consent and attend visits
  • You are having one baby (singleton pregnancy) with 37+ weeks and a planned C-section at Vanderbilt
  • You had at least 3 prenatal visits at Vanderbilt and had swabs taken at 36+ weeks for Group B strep (GBS) screening
  • No lab signs this pregnancy of Group B strep in the urine or swabs, and no other listed infections (like HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis)
  • You can’t have certain past conditions (including prior baby with GBS infection, diabetes type 1 or 2, or genital herpes/HPV infections)
  • Your baby should not need special delivery-room measures beyond routine care, and must not require NICU right away
