Rifaximin study to see how gut bacteria affect mood

This trial tests whether a gut-targeting antibiotic called rifaximin changes the gut microbiome (gut bacteria) and affects emotion. It is looking for healthy men so any mood or gut changes can be more clearly linked to the study treatment.

Who can take part

  • You can read and speak English and/or Dutch, and you agree in writing before any screening
  • You are a healthy man ages 18 to 50 with a BMI between 18.5 and 25
  • You must not have current or past gut, brain/mental health, or hormone (endocrine) disorders
  • You must not use antibiotics in the last 3 months, and not have had a recent infection like a cold or flu
  • You can do the study procedures, including MRI if required (and you are not claustrophobic or unable to have MRI)
  • You have access to a regular household freezer at -18°C
