Test gut bacteria treatment for weight loss in pancreatic cancer

This study looks at how changing the gut microbiome (gut bacteria) may help people with pancreatic cancer regain strength and slow or reverse cancer-related weight loss (cachexia). It also studies gut bacteria differences in people with pancreatic cancer who are losing weight versus those whose weight is stable, and in healthy volunteers.

Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have pancreatic adenocarcinoma that is newly diagnosed (local or spread), or be classified as losing weight (cachexia) or weight-stable
  • Start tube feeding or IV nutrition (parenteral nutrition) within the last 14 days, if you are newly diagnosed and meeting that pathway
  • For the weight-loss (cachexia) group: have significant unplanned weight loss (or low BMI/sarcopenia as measured by a body scan like BIA)
  • Not have had chemotherapy, radiation, or major pancreatic/related surgery already (like duodenopancreatectomy or biliary diversion)
  • Be able to consent and speak enough French or German to understand the study; avoid antibiotics or immune-suppressing drugs for 30 days before joining
