Who can take part
- You are 12 years or older.
- You have a diagnosis of alpha thalassemia (HbH disease).
- You have needed at least 4 to 6 red blood cell transfusions in the past 6 months, or your hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein) is below 10 even without regular transfusions.
- You are generally able to take care of yourself (performance status 0 or 1, or at least 50% on a daily activity scale).
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you have not had a blood clot in the last 6 months.
- You have not had a stem cell transplant or gene therapy, and you are not currently using hydroxyurea.
