- Your baby is between 1 and 27 days old
- Your baby weighs less than 2500 grams (about 5.5 pounds) at birth or is underweight for their length
- Your baby weighs at least 1500 grams (about 3.3 pounds) now
- Your baby can feed by mouth
- Your baby does not have a fever or jaundice
- You plan to stay in the study area for at least 6 months
