X-ray tests for deciding how to treat certain ankle fractures

Who can take part

  • You have a bi-malleolar or tri-malleolar ankle fracture (involving the inner and outer ankle bones, and possibly the back bone).
  • Your first X-ray taken without standing shows less than 7 mm medial clear space, and your doctors feel the ankle is stable once standing X-rays are done.
  • Your fracture pattern matches specific types: medial malleolus type B (between tip and the joint surface) or type C (at the joint surface), and the fibula fracture is in the lower third of the bone.
  • You must be able to be evaluated with standing X-rays within 14 days after your injury, and you’re age 18–75.
  • You were walking before the injury without walking aids, and you can return for follow-up at the hospital area.
