- You are between 18 and 60 years old
- You were seriously injured, with an injury severity score (ISS) of 16 or higher
- You are admitted to the hospital within 24 hours after the injury
- You do not have certain major long-term illnesses (for example, cancer or diabetes)
- You did not already have major organ problems before the injury
