Who can take part
- You are age 45 or older
- You are having major surgery that is expected to last at least 2 hours and require at least 2 days after surgery
- You have either known heart/blood vessel disease (like coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, or poor blood flow to the legs) or at least two major risk factors (like high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, smoking in the past 2+ years, high cholesterol, prior TIA, age 65+, or very high-risk surgery)
- You did not have a serious “acute” heart/blood vessel event within the last 30 days before surgery
- Your overall health rating with anesthesia is not “5 or higher” (see trial staff for what that means)
- You have not joined this study before and can understand and sign consent
