- You had a chest injury within the last 72 hours
- Standard nasal oxygen is not enough (needs at least 10 liters per minute)
- You have severe low oxygen and are struggling to breathe (fast breathing and difficulty breathing)
- You have a carbon dioxide level that is 45 or higher (unless you were assessed after breathing tube removal after emergency surgery)
