Who can take part
- You have been diagnosed with a certain type of breathing failure where your blood has too much carbon dioxide (hypercapnic respiratory failure).
- You are in the intensive care unit (ICU).
- You are currently being treated with either high-flow oxygen or non-invasive ventilation (a mask that helps you breathe).
- You are not too unstable (for example, your breathing rate is under 40 breaths per minute, your oxygen levels are good, and you are awake and alert).
- You do not need a breathing tube right away, as decided by your doctor.
- You do not have a pacemaker or chest wounds that would prevent using a special monitoring device (EIT).
