This trial studies rotator cuff repair surgery when the surgeon uses a regional anesthesia method (numbing the arm area) rather than general anesthesia alone. It may help people with certain types of rotator cuff tendon injuries who are good candidates for outpatient surgery and this anesthesia approach.

Who can take part

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have a rotator cuff tear needing arthroscopic repair: supraspinatus alone or supraspinatus plus infraspinatus, with limited tendon retraction (not severely pulled back)
  • Have minimal fat change in the shoulder muscle (low fatty infiltration on imaging)
  • Have not had prior surgery on the same shoulder
  • Not need subscapularis repair (a different rotator cuff tendon) and not have moderate-to-severe shoulder arthritis (higher-stage wear-and-tear)
  • Be able to safely use the study anesthesia plan (regional anesthesia) and also not have nerve-related problems (neuropathy)
