Mindfulness breathing vs heart-rate training after shoulder surgery pain

This trial compares two non-drug techniques—mindful breathing and heart-rate (HR) biofeedback—to see which helps reduce pain after shoulder surgery. You may be able to join if you have ongoing shoulder pain after surgery and haven’t been using these practices very often.

Who can take part

  • Your shoulder pain has lasted at least 3 months
  • Your shoulder pain happens at least 3 days per week
  • Your pain is at least moderately severe (VAS 40 or higher on a 0–100 scale)
  • You are having surgery for a shoulder problem based on an orthopedic specialist’s plan
  • You have not had shoulder surgery in the past 3 years
  • You do not have major conditions that can affect pain or safety (neurologic disease, cancer, widespread pain like fibromyalgia, or certain bone/rheumatologic problems)
