Who can take part
- You have rectal cancer that is locally advanced (stage T3 or T4, any lymph nodes; or T1–T2 with lymph nodes; and no distant spread).
- You are between 18 and 75 years old.
- You have not had chemotherapy or radiation treatment before.
- Your general condition is good enough for treatment (ECOG 0–2).
- Your recent blood and organ tests are within required limits (blood counts, liver tests, and kidney function) from within 7 days of enrollment.
- You can take capecitabine by mouth (if prescribed) and you understand the study and can attend follow-up visits.
