Maintenance therapy after radiation for limited spread kidney cancer

Oligometastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma

This trial tests whether giving a maintenance medication (pembrolizumab) after targeted radiation helps keep kidney cancer that has spread to a few spots (5 or fewer) from growing. You would receive radiation to each spot and then be randomly assigned to receive either the medication or a placebo (inactive substance) for up to about 2 years.

Who can take part

  • You have kidney cancer that is the clear cell type.
  • Your cancer has spread to 5 or fewer places in your body (like spots in your lungs, lymph nodes, or brain).
  • You have not had immunotherapy (like pembrolizumab or nivolumab) in the last 6 months or other cancer medications in the last month.
  • You are generally up and about (able to do daily activities with little help).
  • Your blood counts, kidney, and liver function are within a safe range (checked by a blood test within 10 days).
  • You are willing to have a biopsy (a small sample taken) of one of the spots that will be treated with radiation.
