Who can take part

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are having heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine
  • Your heart function is classified as NYHA class I, II, or III (mild to moderate symptoms)
  • Your kidney function is normal, with a creatinine level below 1.2 mg/dL before surgery
  • You are willing and able to give written consent to participate
  • You do not have any condition that would make a transesophageal ultrasound unsafe (like esophageal or stomach problems)
