  • You are 18 to 79 years old
  • Your heart started with a shockable rhythm (like ventricular fibrillation)
  • You are unconscious after the cardiac arrest
  • Paramedics can start the cooling treatment within 20 minutes of arriving
  • The cardiac arrest is likely from a heart problem, not a non-heart cause
  • You are not already hypothermic (too cold)
  • You do not have a Do Not Resuscitate order or terminal illness
  • You are not pregnant and there is no barrier to placing a small tube in your nose
