Device to help preterm babies tell speech sounds apart

This study tests a new device that plays special sounds to help preterm babies learn to tell different speech sounds apart. It is for babies born between 32 and 35 weeks of pregnancy to see if the device can improve their hearing and brain development.

Who can take part

  • Your baby must be between 32 weeks and 0 days and 35 weeks and 0 days since conception at the start of the study.
  • Your baby must have been born at 35 weeks or later (gestational age at birth).
  • Your baby must not need a breathing tube (endotracheal tube) to help them breathe.
  • Your baby must not have any major birth defects.
  • Your baby must not have a family history of genetic hearing loss.
  • Your baby must not be taking sedative or seizure medications, and must not have severe white matter injury (a type of brain damage).
